Dr. Roy has been named ‘Building a World of Difference Faculty Fellow in Engineering’ at ISU. Thanks to College of Engineering, ISU for recognizing our efforts.
Our project ‘DREAM-TEAM: Developing a Robust Ecosystem for Additive Manufacturing of Tungsten for Extreme Applications and Management’ has been picked up by US Department of Energy for funding. It will be a major support ($1 million) to push the limits in advanced manufacturing of refractory alloys for extreme (primarily nuclear) applications. This will be a collaborative effort between two research universities (ISU and University of North Dakota) and three National Labs (ANL, ORNL and Ames Lab). Thanks to US Department of Energy for the funding support!

Dr. Roy received a grant ($300,000) from USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) on valorization of waste cooking oil to develop next generation bio-based lubricants for Electric Vehicles. In this project, we will collaborate with Agricultural Research Service, Eastern Regional Research Center (PA). Thanks to our collaborators in this effort!
Our user proposal got accepted for neutron diffraction-based investigation on additively manufactured nitrogen strengthened austenitic steel at Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), ORNL. Dr. Roy and his graduate student Uday will travel to SNS ORNL in September for neutron diffraction experiments on the fabricated samples.

Vishal Mahey has been selected for the prestigious Iowa Research Administration Internship Student Experience (I-RAISE) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Vishal will gain valuable skills in research administration through cohort-based training and hands-on experience at ISU. Congratulations, Vishal, on this remarkable achievement!
Dr. Roy received a grant from Deere & Company ($606,000) to investigate drivetrain (gear and bearings) failure modes from advanced materials, surface science, and lubrication perspectives.

User Proposal titled ‘Dust tolerant surface development for future lunar exploration’ to work with Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) got approved! Doctoral student Pial Das will work with ANL scientists in this effort.

Energy Solutions for Iowa and Beyond Research & Innovation Roundtable (RIR) proposal titled “A Framework to Develop Novel Biobased E-Fluids Supporting Next Generation EV Technology” got selected for funding ($75,000) by VPR office at Iowa State University. Dr. Roy will collaborate with Dr. Xianglan Bai and Dr. Eric Cochran from ISU in this effort.

Dr. Roy won the prestigious Distinguished Early Career Faculty award ($624,989) from the Department of Energy Nuclear Energy University Program to investigate novel surface modification strategies to develop next generation FeCrAl accident tolerant fuel (ATF) claddings.

A group of five graduate students (Sudip, Hyun, Pial, Piash and Uday) presented their research at STLE Annual Meeting at Long Beach, California, USA. Sudip and Hyun jointly won the third place whereas Uday won the first place out of 45 student posters presented at the conference globally. Congratulations to the team!

Emil Umerov joined the group as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar. Emil is a Doctoral student at Samara State Technical University, Russia. He will focus working on understanding the structural and tribological behavior of MAX phase composites fabricated using a novel manufacturing process. Welcome Emil!

Sydney Menne joined the research group as an undergraduate research assistant. She will support Pial on conducting erosive wear experiments to assess the dust tolerant capabilities of aluminum MMC samples for the NASA funded project.

Dr. Roy received grant ($187,760) from NASA to investigate the potential of multi-feeder DED for fabricating dust tolerant surface development for future lunar exploration. Thanks to our collaborators at United Tribes Technology College and Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) NASA for your support during proposal development.

Dr. Roy received another grant ($191,058) from NASA to develop novel sustainable process development for metal additive manufactured samples fabricated using MSFC NASA’s LPBF capability and NASA’s materials of interests. Thanks to our collaborators at MSFC NASA for your support in this effort.
